A Small Girls Experiment- Harajuku Fragrances

Day 5: BABY 1/14/11

“Nobody puts baby in the corner.”  Yeah. We were particularly excited about this fragrance, as the tester vial was pink, which is our favorite color, and we think babies are the coolest.  Nothing like letting your inner child out through scent and style.

Outfit:

Bianca- I guess when people think about baby girls they think of the color baby pink, since the world has made it the norm to welcome baby girls in a shower of pink bows and lace.  This, and the realization that babies wear onesies, was the basis of my outfit.  I too love onesies.  I wore a super-comfortable torn up Barney’s sweater, akin to a super-comfortable beloved baby blanky torn up by overuse and lots of baby adventures.  Top it off with a giant bow necklace, and I’m channeling my inner… mallory

Mallory- Oddly enough, today was the one day that I wasn’t dressed like a baby. So I came equipped with some of my everyday accessories and just put them all on at once. Voila: Baby extraordinaire! Accents include: Barbie hairclips, the Hello Kitty watch I got in a Happy Meal two years ago, a heart-shaped locket featured a bedazzled kitten, and a velcro ‘handholder’ ‘bracelet’ used to leash babies to their parents. OH, and, why yes, that is a brooch I’m wearing with a framed baby photo. of myself. also bedazzled.

Fragrance:

Bianca- This scent was definitely the sweetest.  It reminded me of candy… which babies shouldn’t eat, but girls who want to smell sweet should definitely try to smell like.  I wonder if any boys smiled at Mallory when she was wearing this fragrance?  I know my boy would enjoy it more than when I usually wear his old spice.

Mallory- Gwen Stefani said this fragrance was the hardest to nail and took weeks of tinkering to make just right. It’s supposed to have baby powder undertones, but that’s a detriment to the scent, which smells much more floral and fruity: somewhere half-way between potpurri and candied apples.

Note: We’re making weird faces in our photos because apparently that’s what babies do.

Day 4: MUSIC 1/13/11

First of all, we apologize for the delay in posting the last two days of our Small Girls Harajuku Fragrance experiment.  We’ve been busy doing super awesome client work.  Yeah!

In honor of the music theme, we thought it would be appropriate to post Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Girl, for your listening pleasure.

Fragrance:

Bianca- Out of all the fragrances, this one was my favorite, and I didn’t mind dousing myself in it.  In fact, writing this just reminded me of how much I liked it, and between this sentence and the last, I stopped to put some on.  It’s the perfect mix of sweet and tangy, and also reminds me of a perfume my mother wears.  I can’t place it though, because my mother owns practically every perfume ever made.

I went to a show that night and got really excited to ask my record label friends, music bros, and band dudes if they liked how I smelled.  Unfortunately, the scent did not last long enough through the show.  Shoulda brought the vial.  :(

Mallory- I already own this fragrance* in the real full-size bottle! My mom bought it for me because she thought it looked and dressed like me. And now it also smells like me. Because I wear it with frequency.

Outfit:

Bianca- I wore black leggings, a black moto jacket (duh), and a black shirt… and did a smokey eye with black glitter.  I was dressed for the aforementioned show, which is why I was glad that day was ‘MUSIC’.

Mallory- Though I didn’t go to a show that night, I created my own personal soundsystem out of my head. I pinned buns on either side of my face, turned them into hairphones, and streamed the star wars theme song through them all day.

In case that wasn’t enough, I tried to animate the flow of sound coming out of my ears with that explosion of gold sparkle and pink lace attached to my lobes. (I actually purchased these on Takadashi street in Tokyo -the same street animated on the homepage of the Harajuku Lovers’ website- huzzah!)

*Bianca edit- I don’t think the Music fragrance that Mallory already owns is the same scent as the Music fragrance in our sample pack, but it totally worked.  Mallory dressed like the original Music fragrance, and I inadvertently channeled Music the latest collection (seen above in the black jacket, and wispy hair). Also, upon smelling the two, Mallory’s fragrance smells a bit sweeter vs. the tangy that I liked in the newer fragrance… which again, I think is fitting.

1/12/11

Day 3 of our Harajuku Fragrance experiment is brought to you by the letter G.  As in, the name of the fragrance was ‘G’, which we interpreted as “money”, and later realized it stood for Gwen.

In the G-money theme, we wore green (which is the color of money, and also starts with the letter ‘G’), went to a party by a startup that just got a bunch of G’s with a capital G-roupMe.

And so we discuss our outfits, the fragrance, and the party.

Outfits

Mallory: I wore a green dress to represent dollar bills and a gold jacket to represent a gold brick. I didn’t wear heels because then I’d look like a million bucks and for this particular event I could only look like one thousand. I also repeatedly sang ‘like a g6’ in my head, hoping to parlay the qualities of said g6 in my physical presence and demeanor. Done.

Bianca: We had to dress like G’s… so I wore my green leggings.  That was a given.  Then I just stared at my green leggings for a while and really thought about what what I could wear with them, which is a problem I face every time I wear these green leggings.  I got them because they were like my ode to Poison Ivy (oh god, maybe I should stop referencing comic book characters…).

Anyway, Bada Boum.  There it was.  The Rebecca Minkoff shirt.  And I was like, I bet G’s would be like “Bada Boum”.  Then I put some bling on and decided to wear shorts over my green leggings so I wouldn’t be wearing green leggings as pants.

Moto jacket… some aviators… yea.  Money.

Fragrance Review

Mallory: Since GroupMe clearly knows a thing or two about making a good product, I figured I’d ask them if ‘G’ was deserving of a g. Cam had the most compelling and thought-provoking response.

Cam: This smells really familiar.

Mallory: Like what?

Cam: Teenage girls.

Bianca:  Mallory forewarned me that the fragrance was going to smell bad… and that some people thought it smelled like High School.  I took a sniff, and it reminded me of the scent Sweet Pea from Bath and Body Works.  Which isn’t necessarily bad… but definitely HS.  I tried to get some reactions from people, but the scent wore off after I walked through half the room.  Whatever.  It was weird asking people to smell me anyway.

Party Review

Mallory: Rachel Sklar truly changed the ratio with her wild rendition of Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch”  Other karaoke highlights included Pat.

Bianca:  This party was amazing.  Karaoke, dancing, beer pong, and a persuasive bartender.  Whoever ordered the chicken fingers and french fries towards the end is our 2nd favorite person ever.  Following Pat, who is our first favorite person ever.  As that Observer article says… he truly was a Wonder Boy… holding down the Karaoke fort n stuff.

DAY 1: LOVE 1/10/11

We got some samples of the Harajuku Fragrances during Fashion’s Night Out 2010… from a fragrance truck no less.  Mallory pushed her way to the front of the crowd and snagged them from Gwen Stefani herself.

Pushin through…

Yeah!!

We decided to put them to the test by wearing a different scent each day this week, and arranging our outfits according to how we interpret each fragrance.

Watch our review of Day 1 (above), where we wear (and dress like) LOVE <3 <3
